Katsinam Book Katsinam Book

Katsinam by Horst Antes- Printed in 2000, this hard-to-find large format book contains 528 color plates of Kachinas and is 324 pages long.  It has 116 more color plates than the original edition, which was published in 1980.  Katsinam is one of the best picture references on Kachina figures. In German.  Available again: $375.00.
 

Clitso Dedman, Navajo Carver
 



  A very rare complete fourteen-piece Yeibichai set carved by Clitso Dedman (1879-1953) about 1950. Carved of cottonwood and painted with enamel paint.  This set is from the late period (see Valette, AIA, Spring 2000, below) and has much caricature. Size range from eight inches to eleven inches. Acquired from the Garcia Trading Post in Chinle. Ex collection Nello Guadagnoli, Gallup Photographer. Condition is generally good with some cracks and chips from age. Price $12,500.00   Illustrated pg. 65, fig. 10 & 11.

OTTO PENTEWA OTTO PENTEWA

Unique secular pair of cottonwood carvings of a Hopi couple by OTTO PENTEWA, ca. 1940. Note the eagle plaque the woman is holding and the traditional dress for both figures. Unsigned but the moccasins and the gesture are obviously by Otto. Height 9 inches. $7,500.00 the pair.

Sotuqnang-U

Sotuqnang-U- "God of the sky, the clouds and the rain...spirits certain  Hopis consider to be deities, not kachinas" (Colton 1973, 77) This is an exceptional carving by Otto Pentewa with many extra details.  Has tag: From the Hopi Villages.  Circa 1940, measures 14" high.  $6,800.00



Rugan

Rugan- Hopi-carved Kachina with a white manta cape.  Measures 6 3/4" tall and dates from 1920. $2,200.00



Qöqlö Qöqlö

Qöqlö- "This generous and kindly Kachina comes in pairs usually four nights before the Bean Dance and prophesies good crops and promises toys for the children" (Colton, 1973,21)  This Kachina is a Voltz type, from the late 19th century.  It measures 9" tall. $7,500.00

Crow Bride

Crow Bride- Circa 1940's, this doll shows evidence of many years of play, with a well-worn patina.  Measures 7 1/4" at the top of the ears.  $750.00



Heheya

Heheya- Carved of cottonwood root, this doll measures 5 1/2" tall and dates from the 1940's.  $550.00

Shalako

Hopi-carved Shalako.  Dates from the mid-20th century and stands 13" high. Has cloth painted kilt and long horsehair. $2,200.00



Sikya-Chantaka Sikya-Chantaka

Sikya Chantaka-Called Flowers or Guts in the Snow, a Hopi-carved Kachina. this doll is on a wooden plaque.  The ears have been crudely replaced. Height is 4" not including stand. $210.00

Hummingbird Hummingbird

Hummingbird- Hummingbird Kachina.  Hopi-carved of cottonwood root, this doll is circa 1940's.  Measures 8 1/4" tall.  $1,250.00

Mudhead Clown Kachina, circa 1940s.  Measures 8" tall.  $725.00

Miniature Zuni Kachinas- On the right is the Zuni Blue Warrior of the West or Salimopia.  Has articulated arms. Measures 5" tall, possibly early 20th century. $1,250.00

On the left, Zuni Kachina called "Wooden Ears".  Carved of pine, with articulated arms.  Measures 6" tall.  $1,000.00

New 'Old-Style' Kachinas

New "Old-Style" Kachinas- There is a new generation of Hopi carvers who are making dolls following the traditions of the old style: natural pigments and interpreting Kachinas.
